Presentation tips
Tips for presentations:
There are a few things I saw today (and I think Greg Schwartz will make some comments, as well) about presentations and I think are worth learning from:
- If you have a presentation you want to use, but you it's not exactly as you need it, edit the presentation to meet the needs of the audience. If it needs to be shorter, make a shorter version. If you need to expand or condense, do it. It makes for a better presentation to the audience, and helps you stay focused on giving a good presentation
- Carry a shortened version, especially if you're on a panel, and stay within your time limit (this one is care of an awesome professor of mine, Allen Smith). Don't be the one who runs over, and if you're not, you can still be prepared to give a complete, shorter presentation.
- If you're doing a live demo, be prepared for it to go wrong. Carry a version with screenshots. If you're using Powerpoint, you can just use a screen capture per slide, or learn the advanced layering feature to have things appear when you click on the slide. Even better, if you make an HTML-based presentation, you can even try to emulate some of the functionality such as opening new windows, dummy forms, all sorts of fun.
