Internet Librarian: Getting to Monterey
Jessamyn met me at the airport in San Francisco, and I rented a car for the drive. Jessamyn came prepared with her radical reference roadtrip kit, a clipboard with mapped stuff and whatnot, and I brought a Lonely Planet guide to Route 1 and my GPS, but no real plan. This was an adventure, after all. While I got accustomed to the weirdness of driving a Jeep Wrangler (they didn't have any other economy cars when I checked in), Jessamyn did a fabulous job navigating.
Our first stop was in Pescadero, because there was a serious need for food and coffee. Lonely Planet recommended Duarte's Tavern, which did us well in the food department. After a minor setback trying to mail postcards to our Others (that's *right*, it's *Sunday*, of course the post office is closed), we hit the thrift store for some shopping. A nice top and a pair of Docs later, we were back on the road.
The next excursion was at the Ano Nuevo State Reserve. I managed to snap off wonderful photos, while Jessamyn and I had really interesting conversations hiking in the sun near the Pacific Ocean.
We finally made it to Monterey after many more hours in the road than we had anticipated. We settled in at the B&B, went in search of cheap eats, and bumped into Kelly Robinson, a friend of mine from Simmons. She told us all about her awesome new job, and we had more scintillating discussion on the future of librarianship, issues in leadership, and all sorts of fun as an extension of our discussion throughout the day.
After dinner, it was time to find out where the gang was hanging. We found them at the bar the Portola, had some drinks, and said goodbye until tomorrow.
And now to make a plan for today. :)
